INSPIRE Workshops
The exposure of financial institutions to risks from a transition to a low-carbon economy
November 4, 2020
Co-organised by the NGFS, the objective of this workshop is to build upon the climate scenarios they published in June and address some of the limitations in the current modelling approach, with a focus on transition risks. Experts and academics and experts invited to this workshop will also help develop a coherent framework to link climate scenarios with macro/micro-economic modelling and financial tools that will allow central banks and firms to assess the exposure of their assets to risk derived from climate change.

The second annual INSPIRE Workshop
INSPIRE Festival 2020
1-4 September 2020
Across four days, the INSPIRE community and over 100 participants from NGFS member central banks and supervisors were brought together. Researchers shared the first research findings of their projects and discussed challenges experienced and lessons learned with a focus given on the implications of their research findings for central banks and financial supervisors to mainstream green finance through the policy response to COVID-19. Seven sessions were organised orientated around INSPIRE’s six research themes. NGFS discussants included: Satoshi Ikeda (Financial Services Authority, Japan); Edo Schets (Bank of England); Rafael del Villard (Bank of Mexico); Pierre-François Weber (Banque de France); Fiona Stewart (World Bank); Weilun Lim (Monetary Authority of Singapore); and Pierpaolo Grippa (International Monetary Fund). A final eighth session delved into future plans and strategy in dialogue Irene Heemskerk (De Netherlandsche Bank) and recently announced chair of NGFS Workstream on Research, Ma Jun (Tsinghua University, People’s Bank of China) alongside the INSPIRE advisory committee members.

Bringing together INSPIRE Researchers, NGFS secretariat and a handful of NGFS members, this workshop provided an in-depth exploration of the NGFS’ research agenda and facilitated the exchange of knowledge and experience across participants with the intension of generating useful insights for central bank and supervisors. NGFS discussants included: Romain Svartzman (Banque de France, NGFS Secretariat), Theresa Löber (Bank of England) and Daniel Perez (EIOPA)

London Climate Action Week. Central Banks and Climate Change: The short and long view

Ulrich Volz (SOAS Centre of Sustainable Finance; German Development Institute; INSPIRE), Nick Robins (Grantham Research Institute, LSE), Shamshad Akhtar (Karandaaz Pakistan), Danae Kyriakopoulou (OMFIF) and Adam Tooze (Columbia University) discuss how central banks can fulfil their mandates for financial stability and align their COVID response measures with the Paris agreement in order to avoid locking in to a high carbon recovery. The panel look beyond short-term view of current prices and discuss broader trends and changes that may be occurring in the central banking space. The panel address questions such as ‘are we witnessing the dawn of a new era of central banking?’ and ‘what should the new normal for central banks look like?’.
