Philanthropy & Investors Commit $21.5 Million to Support Global Action on Fertilizer

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt – November 12, 2022 – As the United States and other partners announced funding commitments to the Global Fertilizer Challenge (GFC), a group of leading philanthropies and investors, including ClimateWorks Foundation, the Grantham Foundation, S2G Ventures, the Walton Family Foundation, and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, among others, announced a commitment of $21.5 million to improve how fertilizer is made and used.

Commenting on the commitment on behalf of the group of philanthropic funders Jonathan Pershing, program director of environment at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, said:

“Farmers grow the food that keeps our communities strong, but the production, use, and lack of access to fertilizer are expensive and contribute to the climate, food, nature, and energy crises. To better support farmers, bolster global food security, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, philanthropies and investors have come together to commit $21.5 million to improve how fertilizer is made and used. Our commitment will complement efforts catalyzed through the Global Fertilizer Challenge. We will work together to invest our aligned funding through an independent, stakeholder-led process contributing to improvements at the intersection of the agriculture, industry, and energy sectors.”
